Bec's need for sausage

Bec, who saves this blog from being me all alone in blog land (apart from the mysterious Jessica Rabbit and the occasional Richard Gere), has asked for information about boerwors suppliers in Sydney. Boerwors is a word I tend to misspell (like orifice and fowl), so I have taken the liberty of using her spelling in this post.

Boerwors is a long, loosely-packed South African 'farmer's sausage'. It's usually sold in a coil, which has earned it the nickname 'dog-pooh' in our household, though rest assured it is a tasty treat.

I recently discovered an interesting store in Lane Cove called Springbok Delights, an old butcher's shop which sells not only meat, but also other South African delicacies, such as Ouma Rusks (baby food to Aussies, but very popular for breakfast with South Africans of all ages). I'd put money on them having a nice bit of sausage and plan on investigating soon.

Over to you, my legion of blog fans... who knows of good vendor who will satisfy Bec's craving for not-so-smallgoods?

A traditional African recipe - beer can chicken


Here's a foolproof recipe for roast chicken if you don't have electricity or an oven..

You'll need:

1 chicken
1 can of beer
1 cardboard box
some tinfoil
a wood or coal-fired barbeque (braai to you southern Africans)

Take a good-sized gulp from your beer can so that about 75 per cent of the contents remain. Insert the can into the chicken's, errr, orifica (as per the picture) and carefully stand it up on your hot barbeque grill.

You want your coals to be about 10cm below the foul's feet. Next, cover the chook with a cardboard box lined with aluminium foil, shiny side facing in towards the chicken. The foil should overlap the edges of the box, which should be big enough to leave a gap of 10-15cm around the cooking chicken. Punch four hols in the top of the box, through both the cardboard and the foil, to allow the hot air to rise around the chicken (just like a convection oven).

Do nothing for an hour (except to check periodically that the chicken hasn't tumbled over, and that the coals are still hot). You'll know it's cooking OK by the sound and smell of fat dripping onto the hot coals and sizzling.

A regular size chicken takes between an hour and an hour-and-a-half to cook.

Warning: the only downside with this recipe is that the contents of the beer can are, sadly, undrinkable.

Root, shoot or marry

My friend Rebecca, who has a world-famous blog, is going to be visiting here shortly, so I thought I should blog (is that a verb?) something interesting for her to remark upon.

The most interesting thing that has happened to me in the last couple of weeks is discovering a new game (best played under the influence of alcohol) called root, shoot or marry.

It's simple in its concept, but devlilish in its strategy. A player is given a list of three people - they may be famous or simply known to the player; but must not be a relative or partner. Whether the player is given three people of the same or oppositve sex depends very much on the player, the group and the level of intoxication.

For example, if I was to give you: Russell Crowe, John Howard and, say, your boss, you then have to tell the group which one of the three you would root (for non-Australians: have intimate relations with); who you would shoot; and who you would marry. By the way, the rooting is a one-off, so don't go thinking you could marry Russell Crowe and have a long-term affair with the PM - not fair.

It's not as easy or straightforward as it may seem.

Warning: don't try this game at home.

My new book

A few people have contacted me via my website to ask when my next book will be out. "African Sky" is due for release in Australia in August, 2006.

Other good news (for me, as one day I would like to be rich, if not famous) is that African Sky will be published in Germany (not sure when) and in the UK in March, 2007.

My fourth book (still untitled) will be released in Australia some time in 2007 and I recently signed a deal for numbers six and seven.

Testing, testing, one, two, three... testing


Well this is me, with an elephant and a beer in Mana Pools National Park, Zimbabwe.

Unlike many of the other parks I've visited in Africa, the camp sites at Mana Pools are unfenced, so animals of all shapes and sizes wander through at any time of day.

I've got nothing more interesting or witty to say right now, as I'm still trying to get the hang of how the whole blog thing works. Stay tuned for something more entertaining
